in a couple words for the handle....Gorilla Glue. I sanded the antler to match the conture, use a dremel to cut some "tenons" and set it in with gorilla glue. They were too small to drill and and pin to attach with glue. The inside is just a slight taper at the bottom with a flat bottom. I had to make a larger version of the little chisel I use for doing the bells on calls.

Sounds complicated to me, but it looks great.

How does the gorilla glue hold up to heat? Also, now we need a picture of that tool you made.  ;D

My wife has done EXTENSIVE testing on the gorilla glue and the heat. I help too of course. I broke the handle off one of her BRAND NEW coffee cups about 6 months ago in the shop. Well, I quick in a hurry glued it back on with gorilla glue and set it in the sink. Well, it goes through the dishwasher everyday, sometimes twice and have had no problems.
The handle has to be set INTO the wood for strength I believe and you cut it in so the glue hs bare wood to grab instead of finish. Takes about a couple minutes to cut it out with a dremel tool.
OH and the tool I made is just like the one in this picture only I used a 12 inch long, 1/2 wide Craftsman Flat tip screwdriver to make it from. Does a great job nibbling the end grain away and the shape lets you smooth the sides nice and easy like with a scraper.

This picture os of the top side of the chisel

This is of the bottom.
The one in these pictures is from a 1/4 wide screwdriver. The new one gives a longer handle and sturdier shaft. This one is a bit worn down now, the tip USED to be longer and the side(left when working) was longer.

OH, by the way Glen, The box got here today, beautiful is all I can say. I will make sure tht Calvin gets it. I got a box coming for you too. THANKYOU SO MUCH ;D

That's a neat looking tool. Thanks for the picture.

Sounds like you did a pretty extensive test on the gorilla glue.  ;D

You're Welcome Brian. Just remember our deal. Nothing special. I was glad you accepted my offer of the wood for your Friend. That meant a lot to me right there to think my stuff was good enough for Calvin.   ;D

just a box of scraps my friend. Believe it or not, Miss Kathy spent the last 2 days cleaning the shop while I was feeling poorly. I had some tests done to make sure the cancer was stil gone and they meds they gave me for the tests made me sick this time.  :P So while I layed back, toes up, she came out and cleaned it top to bottom. even UNDER the bench....I bought her a nice dinner today at one of her favorite places. Maybe she'll do it again... ;)

I turned the first cup from that oak today. I glued it up like we talked about. Came out purty too. I'm going to turn another later on when the glue is done drying. The second one I glued up in a more traditional way with all the grain going 1 way. I just HAVE to see how that wonderful grain is going to look like that. I'll post a picture of the one that's done as soon as the handle is dry. :D

Well, the glue is dry enough for me to go ahead and post a picture now. Here is the cup for Calvin. Made from quarter sawn white oak that was so kidly sent to me by Hamer. This is some wonderful wood. The inside of THIS cup was bored with a 3 1/8 fortsner bit then "dressed" with te chisel I made and sanded. The handle is again, the fork from a deer antler. When the glue is FULLY set, I will go back and do some polishing on the handle. I don't want it too smooth though. This cup is large to say the least and is made like it is to hopefully make it easier for him to hold with the difficulties he is having after his stroke.

Here is a picture of the inside for you as well... ;)

That's a nice looking cup. I'd take up coffee drinking if I had one of those.

Very nice Brian!! You made that one look real good. I think the shape & size will help him just as you wanted it to. Is that sucker as heavy as it looks?
