Here is my attempt at pot calls
« on: August 31, 2008, 06:53:59 PM »
Had to look arround and see what pen material i had laying arround so that i could try some of these.  Cant really call them calls yet.  When I get the parts they will be slate over glass.  The Cypress is from a barn in GA it is about 100 years old.  Had a bunch of cross cut blankes so glued 4 together and this is the result.

My opinion won't count for much because I never made one. But I like the looks of them.

Good work there!  Be sure to attach your sound board with either Plumber's GOOP or Marine GOOP.  Marine is harder to find.  There's no other way to do it, cause all the other glues will allow the sound board to come loose when the glass and wood expand and contract at different rates when the call is used in hot and cold environments.

Great looking pots!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I knew that the glue would have to be flexible for the sake of vibration but i didn't think about different expansion and contraction.  Here I think mostly of waterproof.

Those are VERY nice indeed. I've made a turkey call or 2, I really like the way the cypress came out. You're definately going the right direction.

Looks like a nice job turning. How high are your pedestals in the center of the pots? It maybe the pictures but it looks like your pedestals are not that high. There are some differing opinions on how much space should be between your sound board and the top calling surface. I normally allow about 1/8 of an inch. Some of the others may want to add their opinions.

Each post height is different.  Being new to the craft i am trying different spacing to see what sounds best to me.  I think based on what you said I may have been barking up the wrong tree.  I was changing the area between glass and sound holes and not paying much attention to the glass to slate clearance.  Each one had a clearance of between 1/4 and 1/8.  Thanks for the input!
