Three new whistles
« on: August 27, 2011, 07:21:09 PM »
Here's three whistles I made this week and shipped out today.  The first pair are for Shooter007...We did a trade...Whistles for acrylic and some wood.  The darker one is striped ebony and the other is walnut burl that he sent to me to make the whistle from.  Beautiful stuff, but the picture doesn't show it very well.  The 2nd picture is for a customer.  It is flamed purpleheart.  All three have a CA finish.

Nice Job on the whistles. Again the CA finish is awsome and you set the bar high for us to achieve that finish  I am getting closer

How do you finish those with the holes in them? I have been playing with the dogs whistles from the tutorial. I am real close to a one I am  happy with but I would like to CA finish them but the opening is stopping me from trying  :stickman1:

Sorry to hi jack this thread but I have been thinking about how to do that

Thanks Ron

Ron the challenge isn't in applying the CA, it is in the wet sanding to get it all flush again.  The edges of the holes do present a challenge with doing that and I assure you that I've sanded through the edges of quite a few.  I apply as much CA as I think I need, which is quite a few coats, especially in the areas where I'm going to be sanding an edge.  Then I use the stick end (not the cotton end) of a wooden Q-tip as an applicator to put a thin bead of CA around the perimeter of the hole's edge, just to add some thickness to the finish.  Sounds rather ugly and clumsy, but that added thickness sands down and disappears without (usually) blowing through the CA and exposing bare wood.  I use the same q-tip stick to apply a couple drops of CA finish to each hole's sloped surface.  Then I wet sand and buff everything.

Thanks for the nice words guys.
