We see a lot of 40's, a number of 50's and a few 60's every year. Maybe a 70 every year or two, but when I see and 80 or 90 show up I get pretty excited.

One guy fishing next to me a couple years ago foul hooked one, he let it go but we tried to weigh it first. I was the only one around with a scale and it was a dial type 50# scale. It went around twice and broke. That fish, when I held it up, went from my chin down to the ground; that's 60 inches!

Another guy about 5 or 6 years ago was snagging some illegally, but he managed to get a 98# and a 99# in. He didn't get caught that night, but I think he did later on. Not the right way to catch them, but those were definitely way on up there on the scale

Lots of people cheat to catch flatheads, no doubt about that.

There was a survey on catfish1 going where they were asking eachother on a poll if it was okay to cheat to catch flatheads because they are so hard to catch.  The percentage that said it was okay was scary.

They are not that hard to catch actually. I think it is a misconception that you need to sit on the bank all night long waiting for one to bite. At Clinton lake over here, snagging in the spillway became such a problem that they drained it last year and lined the bottom with cattle panels. Snaggers really do not really seem to catch any more flatheads than the guys who study the habits of the Flathead and learn the proper techniques to use. I think that they do more damage to the reputation of the sport than they do to the fish population itself.
