pepper mill and salt shaker
« on: June 16, 2011, 12:15:52 AM »
Made these for a friend's wedding out of some basic walnut.  Pepper mill/salt shaker sets have become my go-to wedding gift in the last couple years.  The finish is six coats of tru oil.

I sure would like to see something other than a close up picture of the works of the peppermill.  :stickman1:

That wasn't there last night. Sure are pretty. I llke those a whole lot. I've made a few of them myself, and they are sure fun to make. Nice job.

Thanks Braz.  They are fun to make but they frustrate me to no end.  I always end up re-chucking them about ten times to take a little more wood off or changing the shape.  I'd like to re-chuck the salt shaker in this pair and shave some width off of it but it is too late to do that now.  I really hate turning beads and need to practice that a lot more, as getting them all the same shape is a challenge for me.

Wierd about the picture.  It was part of my post from the beginning last night, so I don't know why it wasn't showing up on your end.

I would have never noticed the bead width if you hadn't pointed it out KC. I think they look awesome!  :2up:

Thanks Robert.  I do the first coat on the lathe and get it really wet while it spins really slowly.  After soaking it good, I wet sand it with 600 and more oil to fill the grain.  Then I hand sand with the grain to clean it up.  After the first coat dries, subsequent coats are added with a clean cloth off the lathe, buffing with 0000 steel wool between each.
