Got a squirrel call design made
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:15:41 PM »
I played with making squirrel calls these last couple of days, and I've decided on this design.

At first, I worked on boring out the end, thinking it would produce a sound that would cover more of an area.  I was wrong.  It just raised the pitch of the call higher, which is not what I wanted.

This design I picked out allows the call to fit between your thumb and index finger while you are smackin' on the bellow.

I like it.   ;D

;D  Thanks Al.  Just some ol' black walnut from Grandpa's old wood shed.

I'll get into some more exciting woods once I get past turkey season.

Looks pretty snazzy!  What kind of reed did you finally decide on?

We should have all the guts and bellows and other stuff to make these calls in a couple weeks.   You guys can thank Parker for the leg work on this one.   Now if he post a 200 pound squiirrel called in with one of thise calls like those moster deer he posted, I'm gonna have to call BS  LOL

I JUST got this picture back today from one of my Pro Staffers!  It took him AND his brother to take down this HOG, but they got the job done!

As Al said, we're still working on some details.  I think we're going to end up with a couple different variations being available.  This here is a small bellow with a double metal reed, and I really like the way it sounds.

We're also working with some of the larger bellows, and a metal over mylar reed.   :D

You're a nut Parker LOL

 ;D   :D  I've been called worse, that's for sure.

As for the deer calls though, I seriously think what makes them work so well is that they go a tone or two lower than the commercial calls out there, and it just drives the dominant bucks CRAZY.

The other thing that helps is people were successful beyond belief with them the first year, so others are now not afraid to pull them out and give them a blow when nothing else is working.

(Oh yeah.....and nut/squirrel.......HUHUHUH!   :P   ;D )

That is an interesting concept for that squirrel call. Would like one of those myself when you get to producing them. I am definately interested in some reed when you get them Al. And Parker, start working up the tutorial.  ;D

Very neat call.  I haven't ever heard a squirrel call.  Are there any possibilities of posting up some sounds from that gem?

Thanks,
Brian

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Parker,

Nice call. Nothing wrong with black walnut, looks good. Thanks for sharing. How did you attach the bellows? Are they glued or just pushed on?

I like the idea of the squirrel call.About 15 yrs. ago while I was on strike I was hunting the tree rats heavy with a knight/hale call like that, the set-up came with an insrtuctional vcr tape on hitting the bellows on your thigh with a different cadence for the fox squirrel from the smaller grey. Thanks for posting the results,I'm looking at the 20 ga. blackpowder gun now just reminencing ::)

I don't have a microphone.   :-X   :P  Guess I need to look at getting one, huh?!

I initially set them to be pushed on, but there's such a little amount of contact area there, I'm afraid it would come loose over time, so I've decided to glue them on.  The larger bellows may be able to just be pushed on.  (And someone may come up with a better way to where you wouldn't have to glue the smaller ones too!)   ;D
