Title: cocobolo w/ ABW band
Post by: Aaron at Wingerts Woodworks on October 23, 2010, 11:04:16 AM
Knocked this one out last night.  Laaaaate last night.  It is cocobolo with an African blackwood band.  Nice thick CA finish.  It sounds good and rings like crazy.
I'm starting to agree that my calls need a band...Either metal or contrasting wood.  Kinda liking the contrasting wood on this one.  Thoughts?

BEAUTIFULL!!!  Do you attach the ABW before you drill the whole block of make a band and install it?  That piece of coco has some nice grain in it!!!

I think that you have a good thing going with the wood band. It looks good, and is a bit different than most. You definitely have a unique design with both the wood band and the overall call profile. Go with it.

Thanks guys.  I drill and turn the barrel first.  Then I drill a 7/8" hole about 3/8" deep in a square of blackwood and glue it onto a 7/8 tenon turned on the shoulder of the barrel.  Then I re-mount the whole thing in the drill press with the mouthpiece upward and drill the blackwood out.  With the hole already drilled through most of the barrel the hole comes out perfectly centered on the band.  I re-mount it on the lathe, turn the band round, and part off the end of the band after drilling to get it to the width I want.Doing it other ways I've ended up with bands that were 1/16" thick on one side and 1/8" on the other because the hole isn't perfectly centered.
