Title: Attention Al and other lanyard makers
Post by: VECtor Calls on June 29, 2008, 12:24:39 PM
I got this response on another website about the Mrs. lanyards from the tutorial.

Any thoughts, comments?   ???

Parker

Hey Parker,
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but i was in the custom call lanyard business for about five years. The ones your wife is making are just like the "Bolen Callin Strings". Bolen has a patent on them and will bring a lawsuit against you for making them. Been there, Done that, was easier for me to just use another design. which was ok cause if you wear one of those all day they are hard on your neck. Tell her to use a chevron braid style and she will be fine and will have a much more user friendly lanyard. I might even share some trade secrets if she would like.

Assuming the responded knows what they are talking about, it may pay for you and your wife to listen. Sure don't need to get crossways with a law suit.

I wander which part of theirs is patented?  If you can find out which part is patented, then modify that part or do something different than theirs, then they can't do much to ya.

look closely at that patent,

Your lanyards are completely different.

The cobra stitch is in the public domain.

Whoever told you this is  - well - wrong.

I have seen this before on CCO, even got into it with someone and the short story was, they lost the battle.

There is NOTHING wrong with your lanyards the way they are currently made.

The patent is on the way the lanyards are attached where they join, not on the lanyards themselves.

Thank you Al!

Holly is going to be very happy to hear back from you.  She is devistated thinking that she is doing something wrong.

I was hoping it had to do with the way everything is attached.

She will be able to continue down her path with a smile on her face.   ;D

First - if anyone was gong to be sued for this, it would have been Loren Reese.  He really popularized the method in my tutorials many years ago.  His lanyards are in the book Making Custom Duck and Game Calls.

I wrote the first tutorial on how to make these lanyards about 4 years ago.  I would have been second I suppose.

Tell the guy who told you that you would be sued to call the "Lanyard Police"  I swear this same guy hangs around on CCO for the sole purpose of telling people how they are going to get sued for making Lanyards.  He tokd Yankee the same thing last year.

I really feel sorry for people whose three toughest years in school were 3rd grade.  This guy qualifies.

Tell them it is not braided it is macramé and it dates back to the 13th century and ask him if his patent is in Arabic.  The square knotted lanyards are not really braiding but macramé, or at least that was what I was taught back in the 60s when macramé was so popular.  My first lanyard was made by my wife using jute cord, have to say that the para cord is a lot better.

His patent is only for duck and goose call lanyards.  So, advertise your lanyards for something other than duck and goose and you'll be fine as well! ;D

;D  Good stuff.  Lots of giggles and smiles.  Mamma's okay now.   :D

I'm not blaming it on the guy that told me.  He's been pretty good to me, and is not a custom call maker.  I'd say that he had someone tell him, and he got scared about it.

That's why I wanted it out in the open, so everyone could learn from it.  Good stuff!
