Title: First stabilized wood call
Post by: Aaron at Wingerts Woodworks on April 22, 2010, 09:49:20 PM
Turned this one last night.  Stabilized box elder burl with a black Gouldman band and an acrylic insert.  Kind of pink for my taste but the stuff sure is fun to turn.

Dude, that is SICK! Love the colors and quality of your work!

So lemme get this straight. With stabilized woods, you dont have to worry really about sealing the wood from weather right?

Thanks Dunkler!  I wouldn't go as far as to say that you don't have to seal the work...The wood is fully impregnated with what is essentially plastic so it won't warp, degrade, etc.  I'm told that stabilized wood will absorb water (I'm not convinced) but will easily and quickly dry without ever changing dimension or being damaged like natural wood would be.  I think it is probably prudent to apply a finish such as a dip in spar just to be safe.  This one's for me but customer calls will get a finish.

Fowl Attitude, PM'd you.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Looks great KC. The first I did with that color was a barrel too, and It looked pinkish to me too. Then I laminated another with the black acrylic and it took on a whole different color.
