This is the first tutorial I have done
After choosing the wood that I am going to use I cut 1 blank 3 ½ inches long and the other one 3 inches long.I find the center and mark it with a punch.

I then take the longer blank and drill a 7/8 hole 1 ¼ deep with a forstner bit.The center is now marked for the next step.I change to a 5/8 forstner bit and since it will only reach 2 inches I drill ¾ of an inch deep then change to a 5/8 drill bit and drill 1 1/8 deep, and now I change to a ½ inch bit and drill the rest of the way

I drill the shorter blank with a ½ hole all the way through
I turn the longer blank to my desired shape sand and finish and set off to the side

Now lets turn for the reed
I make the blank round and measure in 1 inch from each end and mark with a pencile all the way around
(http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r300/bnccont/5-29-2008010_edited.jpg)
I turn each end to make a 7/8 tennon 1 inch long .I use an open end wrench to keep checking for size
(http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r300/bnccont/5-29-2008012_edited.jpg)
I use a caliper to check the size of what is in the center to match it with the barrel taper the ends of each tennon and put the O-ring grooves in
(http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r300/bnccont/5-29-2008014_edited.jpg)
I use the plastic tube for a guide on where to put the O-ring for the tube
I put in the O-ring grooves sand and finish,Set the reed and put the tube in place

Could some one try and copy and paste this in their browser and see if it works
I probably screwed it up

That won't work Bill. That's just the path to where it is on your computer.

Bill
open an account at photobucket
and post it there

Bill you're going to have to put it on the internet somewhere so we can look at it. You could upload it to your website then provide us a link.
John

So I should have done all that typing right here then saved it to my computer
Bill

As long as you have the file saved you can upload it to the internet. I see you have a website. You can upload it there or like Bill said start an account at photobucket and upload it to that site then just post us a link.

It is here now
Thanks

You did real good Bill!! You're not a rookie anymore on tutorials!! ;D I really like the wood you chose. It stands out in the photos nicely.
Nice looking call too. ;D

Great job on the call and on the tutorial Bill! I understand how to make a deer grunt now. The tutorial was very easy to follow.

How did you know I needed some help!
I am about get in to some hickory to make a deer grunt for a friend and have never made one. I'm looking for all the help I can get ! If I understand your instructions, the reed is going to be in a 5/8 bore chamber with 1/2 bore on both ends. Is this a Glodo style approach, or jus the norm for a deer grunt ? I plan to use all wood for my grunt. Is there any value in using 5/8 bore for the tube part ?
Thanks again for taking the time to post up !

the reed is going to be in a 5/8 bore chamber with 1/2 bore on both ends
Yes that is right and the reed itself is only 1/2 inch in diameter
Is this a Glodo style approach, or jus the norm for a deer grunt ? This is my own way of making a deer call
In the directions you get with the reed kit it tells you to drill a 3/4 hole all the way through the barrel
Is there any value in using 5/8 bore for the tube part ?
Yes there are a few things that come to mind.First a smaller air channel means easier to blow [less air to make the call work]
2nd Comfort, You can turn the barrel a little smaller fits the hand a little nicer and adds comfort to the mouth piece
I hope this helps
If you have anymore questions don't be afraid to ask

Bill, I have made a few grunts on my own and somehow I missed this tutorial. I made one today using your method and it went much better than the way I was doing them before. Thanks for an easy to read tutorial. I think I will be using your method from now on!!
