Title: Few going out today
Post by: stumpjumper on September 30, 2009, 09:07:59 AM
Finished these up yesterday.  Look and sound are where I want them to be.  I am trying to get the finish perfect which ain`t the easiest thing to do.  You guys that make calls look like glass are GOOD.  I`m getting there.  Still working on getting the band enraved or etched.  I think that will set them off.

2 Cocobolo calls, both mid-range

Nice stuff Stump.  The black cocobolo is my favorite, but they all look good.  What finish did you go with?

KC,
I`m still experimenting but on these calls I applied two coats of Teak oil and rubbed it in on the lathe, then 5 coats of Mylands friction polish ( 600 grit inbetween coats) then used 3 coats of spray shellac and polished on the buffing system between coats.

I would like to dip some calls but can`t figure out a good way of attaching the calls to a string so they can dry.

I have a few done the same way as above minus the buffing system.  I then sprayed them with high gloss poly.  Figured the wax on the buffers would not allow the poly to dry

Here's what I do when I want to dip a call. Take a large paper clip and straighten it out all the way. Or use a piece of straight wire. Bend a loop in one end. On the other end, make a straight bend. Then, shove the straight end down into the call to be dipped. The spring action on the wire will hold the call, and it can easily be removed. I like to shove it on through to remove it. Less gouging that way. After dipping, you can use the hook to hang it up to drip dry.

Great calls you got there. I also use the wire to hold the calls when dipping, just don't try to shake too much extra spar (or whatever you are dipping into ) off or you can make the call come off the wire. Ive done that a couple times. What a mess. Use the shake it three times rule! Anymore than that and you're playing with yourself,

Braz, really thanks for the advice.  I mixed up a 60/40 mixture of spar and mineral spirits.  Dipped the test barrel in, let it drip, and use a paper towel to get the last drips.  I think I still need to cut the spar down more as it seemed a little thick.  Also, on the insert, I used electrical tape to cover the tone board but didn`t work perfectly.  Are you guys taping your tone boards as well?  And I QUICKLY realized you need to have the exhaust turned down...dumb my had the tone board down and the tone channel filled with the spar.  Flipped it over real quick    .  Also I taped the band up as well on the barrel prior to dipping.  Did ok.  What I noticed the most, and I need to work on, is that the spar had a tendancy to be thicker on the side of the call that leaned to the side.  I`ll figure that out soon.

Appreciate the help guys!!!!  If my finish comes together I`ll be A OK

Take the call out of the spar and put it on a flat scrap board and let the extra run down onto the board and lat it sit for about 15 min. This will keep it level and the spar will not run to one side. then hang it up just like your are doing now. I actually left my last call on the board and let all of the extra soak into the scrap and it didnt look to bad. I thought there would be a bad ring on the bottom but it all soaked into scrap wood and had no problems. Just thought I would throw that out there for an idea!!

Here is a sound file with me blowing call #1 in the pics.  Tried to show what she could do.  The hail is a little mushy but I had been tuning calls all day and practicing with a comp call so my throat was about shot.  The hail is cleaner than that out of the box.

And yes, I have a problem blowing bent down.  Develpoed it awhile back doing meat comps.  VERY BAD HABIT that I am attempting to break :hammer: :hammer:
