Here's one I just finished up for a local guy. This is the third fancy wood call he's picked up from me. The first was moradillo with an aluminum surface and the second was curly claro walnut with slate. This one is maple burl with a maple burl/hickory striker. Slate over glass. The finish is several coats of waterlox.

 Man that might be the prettiest pot call I've ever seen.....Nice finish
I'm starting to try the Waterlox and can only hope that it turns out that pretty!

Real nice looking call, does the waterlox hold up good over time? I have some just havent used it yet.

Thanks guys. I've found that the waterlox is really durable stuff. Tough as nails, expensive as gold! Seems real similar to spar varnish with the added benefit of faster drying and the tung oil in it makes things prettier. It builds beautifully. It cut small strip-shaped pieces off of a foam brush and use them to apply the stuff when I want to build fairly thick coats. For thin coats a piece of an old t-shirt works fine. No sanding between coats.

looks Great!

Thanks for the info on the finish. One more ? Should it work on cocobolo? I have to get a couple pots cut out this weekend and have some coco that I am itching to turn so thought Id use it. Will waterlox work or should I try a diffrent finish? :thanks:

Again....Nice call!!!!
Looks like jcz and I are really interested in Waterlox.....I got a couple more questions if you don't mind me asking?
The instructions call for 4 coats.....Have you found that 4 is enough or does it require more.....I am sure the wood type has something to do with it!
Also does it need to be buffed after the last coat? If so whats the best method?
Thanks in advance for your help.....It looks like you got that finish mastered

JCZ and Hayes,
I can't say if waterlox will work on cocobolo. Haven't tried that yet. If you want, give me a day or so and I'll give it a try on a scrap piece. I don't see why it wouldn't work though. I've always sanded my cocobolo pots to 1500 or 2000 grit until they really shine and then just hit them with a couple coats of Mylands friction polish. That works for me and is holding up well.
The first coat of Waterlox will pretty much absorb into the wood (unless it is really dense closed-grain wood), kind of like laquer does. The second coat begins the building. I've used as little as two coats and it looks just fine. I normally use 3 or 4 coats when I want a thick glossy finish. I've never buffed it...Don't have the equipment for that just yet. It is pretty thick stuff, much thicker than laquer. It normally dries in about 12-20 hours, but it can take two days per coat if it is humid. I usually bring the calls in from the shop when finishing so they dry quicker.
My favorite applicator is little pieces of foam brushes. I buy the value packs of the big ones and then cut them into 1/2" strips with scissors. Works good for me.

Thanks KC for the info.....I started using it last week and I have found the same thing you have.....I have 4 coats on a piece of rose wood and it looks good but still have some small pores to fill up....I also have 4 coats on a piece of Paduk too.....It really brought out the color of the wood to a brilliant red/orange.....Your finish looks flawless.....Again great looking call!
Thanks

Let me know how it works on the rosewood! I'd like to try it on some moradillo (Bolivian rosewood) but haven't had the guts to yet.

I'll do it!....I have it on a combo wood trumpet (Yucatan Rosewood and Ebony) So far so good....There are some small grain pores that need filled up yet.....Both woods seem to be taking it well! I like that Bolivian Rosewood....It's my favorite exotic!

Where can you buy Waterlox?

Where can you buy Waterlox?
I paid waaaay too much at Woodcraft. I think I gave around $35 for a quart. It isn't cheap anywhere when you compare it to spar or laquer. You can buy it online for a lot less through Craft Supplies (which is an awesome woodturning supplier if you haven't ever done business with them...their catalog offers days and days of quality bathroom reading material).
