Is epoxying acceptable ofer pinning a band on a barrell? Or should a guy do both? From my understanding to dont want the barrell to tight on there so there is a little give for the wood to expand when you push your insert in?

I glue all my bands no pins required. The key is using a good epoxy. I use this one.

Don, my answer depends somewhat on the band and the material the band is and what it is going on.
I always glue on wooden bands no matter what.
For anodized aluminum bands on acrylic calls, I use an industrial epoxy adhesive (think JB Weld).
For wooden calls with an either brass or copper band, I pin the band. The band is also a pretty tight fit. Matching metal pins.
For stabilized wood calls with either a brass or copper band I typically pin and epoxy the band. Again, the band is a pretty tight fit.
When pinning, I pin in 3 places as opposed to the 2 pins that most use. It is one more pin, but structurally, you don't get the rocking band even if/when the barrel shrinks.
