Title: Box call question
Post by: Jamie Henthorn on January 13, 2018, 12:16:03 PM
Working on making my first box call. Is there a better way too hollow out  the center than a forstner bit and chisel? Thinking about a mill bit in the drill press with a x/y axis table attached. Punched through the side of my first attempt, and when sanding the side of my second ended up going through.

Yes that will work. If you intent to make more than a very few calls be aware that the bearings in a drill press are not designed to take a side load. I would take 90% of the wood with a chisel and then only mill the last little bit.

Lots of boxes are made with sides rather than a hollowed out base. Kudos for you for going with the hollow out method though!

A router with a spiral bit is another option if you can figure out how to control the removal well.

Instead of using a drill press with your idea, keep an eye out for a shopsmith.  Their spindle is designed for that lateral load.  Plus they have easy adjustable variable speed.  No changing belt positions.  Plus you can angle the table to get your box sides angled.
