Title: New and wondering
Post by: TimHall on October 23, 2017, 06:05:59 PM
Hello folks.  I'm very new to this turning thing.  I bought an old Craftsman from a friend and so far have enjoyed destroying wood. My question (for right now) is what size are your blanks?  I know 3 to 4 inches long but what about thickness? Thanks

I think most call makers use 1 1/2" square, and some use a 2" square.   You might get by with 1 1/4" for some calls.  A lot depends on your style of call.   But the standard for most I think, is 1 1/2".

My standard size is 11/2"x5" for tone boards and 2"x5" for the body. The extra length is so I don't feel cramped for space.

Welcome to the forum Tim!
You did not say what style call you are making but general guidelines would be:
-Reelfoot style metal reed calls are usually made from 2X2 by 5 inch long blanks and the insert can be easily made from a 1 inch dowel. Cocobolo works well for the insert as does maple.
-Arkansas style calls are usually made from a 1.5X1.5 by 3-4 inch blank. Barrels and inserts can be made from either wood or achrylic.
