Hey all,
Just recently started cutting tenons to add a little color/accent to my calls. Still am unsure the best and most accurate way to cut them and also wondering how guys are able to cut such narrow ones. I seen a cocabola call this morning on Facebook that had a tenon made of three narrow cut strip of black and white acrylic. It looked amazing I'd love to be able to make narrow tenons like that but am unsure of how to get the accuracy you would need. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You may have to attach a pic for us to understand the three narrow strip concept you are talking about.

Sounds like you might be asking about inlays, end caps, or spacers (acrylic, brass, aluminum, contrasting wood, etc.) rather than tenons?

Yeah that's what I meant. I wondered if I was using the wrong word but wasn't sure what else to call it

Think of a washer that goes over a bolt. The inlays are just narrow strips of material that slip over a longer tenon (like the washer). And the excess part of the tenon goes into the parent material being glued to.

Is doing it the way you described much stronger then just gluing/bonding each layer to one another and then drilling and turning your blank? Or is this just personal preference?

Tenons are much much stronger than a glue joint only and the best way to accomplish what you are trying to do. Stack and glue the washers of contrasting materials on your tenon.

Just gluing them together end to end, especially wood, will fail.
