Title: Help with specialized duck call

Hey guys, I need to pick the brain of you duck call masters.  I got a guy who wants a reelfoot looking call but with a Arkansas style insert.  My normal barrels are 2 3/4" and the one I've made for this call is 4" long.  I tried it with my normal insert length and it just wasn't happening.  It sounded flat.  Next, I added about 3/4" to the overall length of the insert, not the toneboard, just between the cork notch and where the insert stops at the barrel and still no joy.  Any tips or ideas on what I can try?  Any help would be appreciated.

I will take a stab at it for what it is worth, remembering I have not tried this.

I would think that as you add length to the area you mentioned you would need to increase the drill size for the exhaust since you are having to push air farther and it makes the call flat because it cannot exhaust enough air.

Post the result if you try this.

Thanks for the reply and I agree with you and that is one of the things that I had tried.  I think another description of the problem is unresponsive.  It's like there is so much air volume in the barrel I can't get it to perform like I think it should.  I can get it to feed just fine.  It's just the quack that is way off.

I agree with Ben. On the 5/8 bore Reelfoot style call that I make I use a 4 inch barrel with a 1/4 inch tone channel and a large cone on the exhaust. Got to get the air thru the call.

I used a step drill bit down to 1/2" for the exhaust.  Is that enough?

Ended up making firewood out of the first insert and started over.  Sounds much better now.  My customer wanted a big old school looking call with an oil finish.  I went with black walnut barrel and African blackwood insert.  I decided to try a decoy cord wrap on the barrel and insert and I think it's a cool look.  Might try it again. Here's the end result.  Thanks for the help.
