Title: Refurbished Calls
Post by: FDR on February 14, 2017, 01:17:24 PM

I recently got these calls into the shop to rebuild/refurbish for a customer. The calls were handed down through a family and the customer wanted them returned to working condition. The Scobey call was missing its insert and the unmarked call was missing its wedge and reed. The unmarked call appears to be an early Johnny Marsh. The Scobey was interesting in that the barrel was reamed from both ends with the insert reamer, I assume to increase the air volume through the call. I have never seen a Scobey done this way. Interesting! The Scobey got a new insert, new reed and tuning.
To make a new wedge for the Marsh I first make a new insert copying the original as close as possible. Then I used the wedge from the new insert to replace the missing wedge. I then make another wedge for the new insert and have a finished insert to use for another call.
To preserve the original Scobey signature and as much of the original finish as possible on both calls I just resealed the call bores and applied a coat of thinned  Tru Oil over the exterior of both.

Nice job!

I've had the pleasure of refurbishing a few vintage calls through the years. Mixes callmaking skills with some other craftsmanship skills.
