Title: Mystery Wood?
Post by: C Ciuffetelli on September 17, 2016, 09:59:00 PM
Hey everyone,

My father in law recently picked me up some blanks and one of them was not labelled. Can anyone help me identify the kind of wood this might be?

Thanks in advance,

Carlo

I have some Pau Ferro that looks a lot like that. Great turning wood, tight grain, and the figure shows really nicely when finished.

Not sure on that one, but if it is dense and a little oily like it looks there, its gonna look great round!

Thanks for responding guys. Take a look at the attached link. It does look like Pau Ferro.

I turned my first "start to finished" insert with it last night and it turned really nice! Over the last couple months I've been working on my inserts using 5/8 wooden dowels to experiment. I've been taking tons of notes and making a lot of firewood, but every one I work on seems to progressively get better. At times it can be frustrating, but the trial and error process of figuring things out is priceless.
