Title: Shortcut for sizing tenons
Post by: Aaron Vice on January 24, 2016, 12:37:26 AM
I recently had a large order to fill. I found that sizing the tenon for my bands can take some time to get just right. Had a couple that I accidentally went too small on and had to flip them around and make it work. I came up with a little trick that has helped me a great deal. I've been onTHO for around two years and don't remember anyone showing me this, but if it's been done before, on well.

I turned a piece of acrylic down to about .015 larger than my tenon diameter. (Red in my case) I mount this on my mandrel prior to my blank. Then I simply turn my blank round, measure for my band, and then turn the blank down just until the tool kisses the acrylic. If you leave a tiny gap, the gauge will actually stop turning when the tool touches it. Once I get to this point, I start using my caliper.

It's nothing fancy, but it cuts down on the number of times I have to check things for sure.

Hope this helps someone.

Smart idea, I myself are always looking for ways to cut production time down turning calls by hand.

Really comes in handy, I run a similar set up.  I have one on each end of my mandrel, one for the tenon and one for the mouthpiece. I use one as well for my inserts.  keeps the calls consistent.

You can also make a bushing like this for using your mandrel on a stepped bore.  Make the bushing a close fit to the mandrel, and to the larger diameter step of the step bore - it supports the barrel and keeps it straight.  You could also make a cone version that would allow you to sung up on it a bit better by pushing the blank on the mandrel and then tightening the expander while holding it.

Thank you for this great idea.  It should make things go a little faster and be a plus  for consistency.

Greeting
I am from Croatian, tried to make a whistle but my problem jig for cutting.
I found him to buy but the price of $ 100 plus postage what is financially impossible to pay because I earn $ 400 a month and I barely be enough until the next salary.
so I wanted to ask whether it is somehow possible to obtain a draft so that you I do JIG.
