Title: Flyline spooling jig
Post by: lazyMlazyK on June 03, 2015, 08:46:51 PM
This might be an odd question, but figured it sure can't hurt to ask. A question for the fly fisherman - I'd like to build a jig to hold my flyfishing reel spool so that I can spin it on my lathe to spool on the backing and flyline.  Has anyone ever built something like this?  My spool belongs inside a Lamson Waterworks Guru 4.0 reel. Thanks in advance!

Here's the spool:

The spool is made of machined bar stock aluminum, and I need a way to friction-fit it in my lathe without bending it at all.

What about grabbing the spindle in your collet chuck?

You know, it's been a long day...that didn't even cross my mind David.  Just did that and it worked great!  Thanks for jogging my brain!

Watch those fingers!  One loop of backing around a finger will leave it throbbing at the least.

Hahaha. Sometimes that's all it takes. ;D Glad you figured something out! I've never been good at fly fishing. Makes no sense as I love to trout fish.... I even got into tying flies but I just CAN NOT get the cast down...

I agree, best watch your fingers CLOSE. That line will really eat you.
