Title: Ebonized Maple
Post by: xcallmaker on April 26, 2015, 11:53:23 AM
Periodically I post up a Reelfoot call that i feel is worthwhile of posting. I admire The work you guys do on your Reelfoots and have seen some great work on this forum. I make mostly Arkansas style calls but have been making Reelfoots for 20 years and they still hold a special place in my heart. Anyways this is a tiger striped maple call that is stained by ebonzing. For the few of you who may not know what that is it's just simply adding vinegar to some rusty metal and let it react in a jar and then wipe it on your call. The solution will react with the tannins in the wood and change its color to black.

Like David said that is awesome.

I have been adding another step in the ebonizing world.  Try mixing some of this http://www.amazon.com/Generic-Wine-Tannin-1-lb/dp/B0064H0YR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430065759&sr=8-1&keywords=wine+tannins with DNA and applying it first.  Learned this trick from a muzzleloader builder.
