Got a 6" Jet Jointer yesterday so I decided to use it on some 2x4's. Jointed both sides of all 9 boards and glued them last night. Got a 13" x 3" bowl from them. Left it a little thick so it wouldn't break......

Not sure why one pic is bigger then the other...
Finished with Tried and True Original.

Pretty sure I have never seen a bowl made of construction lumber, very cool!
-
Thanks, Joe! I saw a couple videos on you tube where they used big pine or fir beams. It looked really cool so I thought I'd try it....
-
aww now your just showing off. great job David your a talented young man.
-
Haha. Thanks Ryan.
-
That is awesome David. Nice job!
-
Thanks!

:thanks:

That's pretty slick David. I like it! Make sure you are using a bowl gouge and not a spindle gouge when you turn any bowls. Don't ask how I know.
And always try and use a tailstock for as long as you can to provide support. I had a bowl fly off and do a burn out on my hand one time. Not a good thing.
Be safe, and have fun!

Ouch! Bet that hurt! I've got a couple bowl gouges that i use. 5/8 for most stuff and I use the 3/8 for getting the dovetail on the tennon or inside tenon (I am having a brainfsrt and can't think of what it's called) Even taking super light cuts it tore out bad, but pine is soft enouhave sanding isn't to bad.

Looks pretty cool. ;)
-
Thanks Vince.
-
Yup... its cool! Nice work.
-
Thanks Rick.... One of my mom's friends saw it and wants one.... Guess I need to get it started.
-
Have you tried turning any boxes? I make small boxes about 2x2 and the ladies love them. I couldn't spit them out fast enough over the summer. They are great skill builders too. I will post a thread if I can find a photo.
-
I tried once. Failed. I didn't really try hard though, I was bored and just tried turning something real quick.

David,
Here's a look at my "bowl making" venture:

I imagine one day you will be at this level.
Have fun! Be careful.

Ooooooo! Coring system! Sweet. That looks like it's about 13-14"? I've got a couple drying right now that are about that size. ;D I'll try and get some pics up, I feel like turning some wet wood right now....
-
Do you feel like the coring system was worth the money? I have looked at buying one but dang they're expensive..... which one is that?
-
David,
It's the Oneway Easy Core system.
If I was you, I would hold off on a coring system till you get a little more bowl turning experience under your belt, and decide if you like doing them?
Meantime, rough your green (wet) bowls out. Leave them on the thicker side. You can check them with a MC meter if you have one to find out where you are starting from? Weigh them, and wrap them in brown paper. This will help slow the drying down. Then put the paper wrapped bowls somewhere to dry. Check them in a month. Reweigh them and record the weight. I write it on the bottom of the bowl where it will later be turned off. Then put them back to continue drying. There is no rushing the process. Finally when they stop losing weight (roughly 10-12%MC) you can try finish turning. Be prepared to find some checking or cracks. It's sort of inevitable. You can fill the cracks with CA and wood dust.
I have a bunch of rough turned bowls drying in the rafters of my tractor shed. One of these days I'll pull them down and finish them. Right now I have a bunch that are completed. They are to the point of piling up in my shop.
Bowl turning sure generates the saw dust and shavings! That's sort of the reason I got the coring system.
Have fun!

Oh heck, I realized I liked turning bowls 8 months ago! lol. I don't have a lot drying but there is enough to take up some space. Another way to get a circular blank Is to make a circle cutting jig. They are pretty simple and are really helpful for cutting anything round, I just use it for bowl blanks. I have used the Bag drying process but have recently started coating them with a thin coat of anchor seal. It does not take up as much space and I think it is a little easier.

Man I look at all boards at work and always think of how they would look on the lathe. Great job
-
Thank you! It wasn't that hard, I'm surprised I don't see them more...
