Lookin' good Boss! What did you decide for the fit on the reeds vs. the barrel on these?
I have been doing the Latta method one mine, but only turning them down to 43/64th's and using that mandrel for them. It leaves a little bit more room for error in not busting the guts while turning them. Using carbide tools has helped a TON too!

Your calls are beautiful. What are the job of the sleeves (at least that is what they look like)? I just finished up two calls which fit snug in my wood, but the sound is off. To get the sound right I have to pinch the guts above the wood to get the seal even tighter higher up. I followed the Latta method to the letter and my issues are above the wood and the lip. Wondered if you might have used the sleeve for something like this?

Thank you! I do a few things to my insert one is to turn a o-ring groove into the insert. I put it about 1/4" from the top where the mouth piece transition takes place. This helps keep the reed in place and make a nice airtight fit into the barrel. I use the MT2 taper reamer on my barrels and I like the insert to fit nearly flush as you can see in the pictures. The sleeve over the mouth piece is latex surgical tubing. I think it helps the sound and directs the sound thru the barrel. I also sand the sides of the reed down as I find they can be a tad larger than the groove they fit in. This aids in putting the call together and keeps the reed from getting hung up on the guides that are molded into the insert. It was just a matter of building them playing them not liking what I heard then trouble shooting the causes and coming up with a remedy. Hope this helps you!

Great advice and I thank you for it. Had not though of sanding the reed down at all. That might change things immediately. Surgical tubing is something I would have never thought of and had not seen in any photos til yours.
I am curious what size o ring you used? I tried a number 10 from Home Depot. It was a tad too thick. I had not used a reamer but narrowed down my guts to fit the hole so I guess my situation might be different. It fits tight without any o ring but that might be affecting the sound. Again, thanks.

I use a #14 buna rubber I get them from Al's store. Same one I use for my duck calls.

Got it. Thanks. After writing you the last post I went back thru all the older posts. Many things stood out to me that did not catch my eye or make sense before. When I first started, I was so busy looking for instructions and "how to" advice I bypassed anything about the tubing. Learned a good lesson on this one. Have a great day!
