What reed did you use?

John the reeds are JC Products .016 reed and they sound great.

Hello Tim,I prefer the squirrel call a lil longer than yours and I like them the same diameter as the rubber bellows. Here's a view of mine as those measurements as a guide.I like your profile and material selection bigtime.Nice job  (http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n298/spurs8/muzsq.jpg)

Tim, all the JC reeds are marked .016. Look at some different reeds and you will see they are all marked the same. Don't want you getting caught putting something in that is not what you intended. Like a jack for a cottontail or something. You have to know what the reed is called, like a LV005 or a LVDR025 or whatever. Then you need to keep them separated. I don't know how to tell one from the other if they get mixed up. :down1:

Tim I'm curious when you install the reed if you have it facing in toward the bellow or out the barrel?

I have the reed facing the bellows is this the right way :sweatdrop:

Tim I don't think there is a right way. I was just curious which way you do them. I prefer them facing the bellow because you can get a louder bark from them but they are made both ways.
Thanks

:san1: Santa says turn them into the barrel, not the bellow, so the user won't crush the reed while striking the bellow.
This way, the sound comes when the bellow is filling with air, not when it is being compressed.
You can always set the reed inside the barrel so it can't be hit though I suppose. I have not done it this way, because I wonder how much less air then goes across the reed.
The reed model # is LVDR-005 (Stainless over mylar)
LVDR-002 (double stainless) will also work, but I think 005's are easier to tune correctly.

Try one this way Parker. I'd like your opinion on it.

 I'll have to give it a try next time I have one to put together. Ought to have an opportunity in the next week.

I've never even made one of these yet. Notice I say yet. I have some bellows, both sizes, and some reeds. Maybe tomorrow I'll turn a couple. I'll fit a reed towards the bellows on one and away on the other. That way I'll have an easy way of comparing.
-
I use JC .025 Double reed .I also make a insert the holds the reed towards the bellow all inclosed. Then the insert is put into the Barrel. If I get a chance today ,I'll take a picture.
OH...Nice Barkers Guys!
-
Parker you said you tune the reeds. To what extent? I blade mine for predator calls, but, since I have never made a squirrel call, I'm not sure to what extend you "tune".
-
Some MAJOR blading to give them the deep south drawl. My squirrel calls get their workouts in MO, AR, GA, and AL. :san4:
