I have a question for all of the call makers that make there crow calls with the MT 2 reamer. In the past I have used the "O" ring fit method and thinking about switching to the friction MT fit. When you use the MT 2 reamer do you ream the inside before or after turning? If before how do you mount the blank on the lathe? Thanks, John

I do it after the call is turned and finished.
After you do the first call, pulling the reamer out occasionally to check the depth, mark the reamer with a magic marker so you know how deep to go in the future.

I drill, then ream and then turn to shape. I use a plug mandrel set up for turning them.

The Latta method is by far the best one for longevity of the call for the end user.
If you want to make it easier on yourself, get a 43/64 drill bit and a 43/64 mandrel (custom by Flint Hills). That way, you don't have to turn the guts down so far for the Latta method.
That little bit of material makes a huge difference, especially for the bit reed calls since they have a sensitive (thin) neck.

I've done some m2 taper fits with a reamer . but the latta fit was much better ,took more time but you could make a few in advance. now a days i get more satisfaction from making my own guts. to see a call that you made every piece of is a great feeling and the money you save from not buying guts i just use scrape wood. on top of that people tend to buy custom calls more than a turned barrel with some plastic stuck in them . not saying i dont stuff plastic goose guts into my goose calls but thats for a different day. keep turning.
