Sorry for the dumb question, I am new at this. How are you guys turning down Al bite reeds? I have a metal lathe and chuck them up and they seem to like to jump out. They will not fit in my collets. Do you turn them real slow? Real fast? Carbide tools? I also have a wood lathe I turn the barrels on but no chuck jaws for it yet. Any help would be great, maybe a pic or 2.

I use a 4 jaw pin chuck so I can grab everything well. I use a lot of electrical tape, i use sandpaper more than any tools, and when I do use tools a little, I use carbide ones at a slow speed.
On a bad day when I start breaking them (because of the thin neck), I quit and go to something else. It takes a patient hand to do it right.
On the wobble, you may want to see if you are turning it with the reed in place while turning. This is a must in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply Vince are you saying you chuck up the bite side of the call rather than grabing a little of the taper then turning?

Yes, I do chuck up the bite side. After I cover it in probably.....8-10 wraps of electrical tape, I would say?
I also wrap the very end of the exhaust side with one wrap of electrical tape VERY tightly too, to ensure the parts stay together while I turn down the rest of the taper.
I still CAN NOT believe it is not in the interest of the call molding companies to offer us double 013 neoprene o-ring fitted crow and bite call guts. It is just mind boggling to me.

Good deal man. Still gotta go crazy slow, that's for sure, but it works, and NO DOUBT it helps you put together a more superior call than what is being put out a lot of other places!

The only thing that helped me keep from blowing them up is thin cello double sided tape between the halves at the exhaust end and a couple of wraps of electrical tape on the bite end close to the shoulder.

Thanks Vince. Just got 10 sets of guts in the mail yesterday. Thanks for the fast shipping Al! Now to play with it and see what I can come up with.

Take your time with them. They can blow up really easily. If they start blowing up, take you time and do it with the '100 grit gouge' (sandpaper).

Looks like it's going to be a while. I replaced the head stock bearings in my lathe a while back and today was the first time I've used it. More runout now than before the new bearings.

I used to use the Latta method and felt it was best. Then I got a MT2 reamer (thanks Al), and haven't looked back! I just ream the drilled square stock slightly deep and turn to final shape. They hold great and look flawless!
