Ok as promised here's how I do my 2 piece strikers. There are a bunch of ways to do them this is my favorite. The 4 jaw chuck is the same I use to make my pot calls aswell. If you haven't checked out that tutorial you should its a very easy way to make a pot call.
Ok first pic is what all I use to do the 2 piece strikers.

From left to right CA activator, drill chuck, 60 degree live center, 5/16" drill bit, 4 jaw chuck with pin jaws, 5/16" dowel, 1"x1"x4" wood, CA glue, at top sand paper grits 100,150,220,320,400, and 0000 steel wool, and at the bottom a small parting tool and a carbide easy wood tool.
Ok next pic is chosen wood piece in the 4 jaw chuck.

Next pic is wood in chuck and drill bit in drill chuck. This is what the set up should look like.

Before I drill the blank I like to take the time to square up the end of the blank before I drill it

I take about 1/16" of the end to true up the end I also hollow out a small indention for the drill bit to start easier

Next I drill about 1" into block with bit

Ok next check to see if your selected dowel fits some will and some won't. I'm using paduck 5/16" dowel and it will fit with force but what I like to do is roll up a small piece of 100 grit sand paper and sand it out a little to make an easier fit. Notice the first pic it just goes in slightly and I will have to force to get it in there

Ok next I put the live center on and center it up

Now turn It round.

**** On a side note for those of you that are going to try this and don't have or have never used a 4 jaw chuck this chuck like others will take the hide right off a finger extremely fast. Trust me I know... Be very care with your tools close to the jaws and be aware that it can and sometimes does catch so just be aware of the danger of using this set up*****

I made a small mandrel out of a 5/16" bolt and I put that in the 4 jaw chuck. (Well, I did, until I ordered a 5/16" collet). I work the blank from the opposite direction this way. It allows me to work a slightly smaller blank if the blank size is a concern.

I was told to throw some tape that stick out a bit and they will slap your knuckle before the jaws actually do.

I have one question. Does it matter about the direction of the wood grain? It looks like your grain is perpendicular? I have tried turning some with the wood grain and have not been successful but I have only tried twice. It may not matter but I had to ask.

Stacy grain shouldn't matter as long as your tools are sharp. Also the best sand paper you can buy will save you time aswell on any call. Most people having issues with cross grain or porse grain don't either 1. Use sharp tools or 2. Sand thoroughly with the proper grits of paper. I use 150,220,320,400 but that's just me some use other combos but I've found those 5 work good for me. Agian buy the best sand paper you can afford and use it.

It basicly allows you to use a fancy wood for the striker top and be versitile with different combinations of wood for optium sound. You can either make the dowel your self or purchase the pre-made dowels of various woods. I like to use maple dowels and Purple Heart for the best sound. Others like Osage, hickory and walnut.

I have one question, do you shore up both ends of the block of wood. I guess you wood. Thanks for the step by step.
