Title: 1911 grips
Post by: Jon @ JRwoods on August 24, 2012, 11:48:56 PM
Made these for my brother-in-law.   He bought the pistol for a ten year anniversary gift for his wife.   :2up:  Stabilized spalted hackberry grips on a Dan Wesson Commander 9mm 1911.
I REALLY like this gun.

Holster was made by a custom maker here in Wichita.

Nice work man!  What kind of finish do you put on something like that?

CA.
I wasn't sure if it would turn out like I wanted but its not to bad.  I sanded and buffed but it still had some bughole voids.  So i was filling holes and figured what the heck, the worst I would have to do would be sand it off.
I used medium CA on a good old viva paper towel and wiped it on pretty thick.  Let it dry without accelerator, I didn't want to risk putting haze in it.  Four coats like that then sanded with micro mesh and buffed.
No way this stuff would've been solid enough for this before stabilizing.
Thanks Paul!
