I had the privelege of making a call for Governor Parkinson a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Long story short, my best friend is closely related to the Brownback family and I grew up hunting on Sam Brownback's parents and brother's land. Never met Sam, but respect his family a lot. When he became Governor I sent him an email dropping a few names and suggesting I make him a call for use on the annual Governor's turkey hunt. His staff dropped the ball and although they intended to get in touch, they did so only a few days before last year's hunt. Not enough time to make a call. So this year they got in touch with me and we're arranging for me to go to Topeka and personally present this call to Governor Brownback before this year's hunt. Hoping to give him a little calling lesson in the office! Not sure if it'll actually get used, but nonetheless I'm excited to get to make it and present it. The Gov's scheduler is supposed to be getting in touch with me to set a date/time.
The call is osage and walnut, both of which I cut myself from logs I scored from the local city arborist. Aluminum surface, glass sounboard, tung oil finish.
I took a stab at a little display stand and it actually worked out ok. Making that kind of got me wanting to get a new router table though. :devil2:

Nice feather in your cap, so to speak, for getting a call to the governer. Can always put that on your resume. not everyone can say that. I've gotten some milage with a pen I mde for the speaker of our assembly her in CAlifornia. He's a democrap, but I made it anyway. Don't have to agree with his politics to admire the position. Congratulaton on a fine looking call too.
-
Very nice KC, something to definitely be proud of

Thank you guys. Hope to follow up with some pics of me and the Governor making some turkey noises in the next month or so.

Heading to the capital next Thursday morning to meet Governor Brownback and present the call to him. Gotta dig up my dress clothes I guess!

You can borrow my Mossy Oak tie.

I flat out refuse to wear a suit. Pretty sure my wife would prohibit me from leaving the house in a camo tie Donnie! Told her I am wearing khakis and a shirt and tie (not a camo one), and she looked at me like I'm a dirtbag.
-
Khakis are the greatest... classy enough to wear to a wedding, yet sturdy enough to hold together during the brawl about 3 hours into the reception.

Bras for the cause is next weekend. I'll whip up one and send it to you but you have to have it back for next saturday. :taz: :taz:
Just in case you forgot.

combats on making a classy call/stand setup for the governor.
Getting to present it is a whole new level of cool.
Paul, I almost forgot that image from last year, now I have to drink it away all over again!
-
I don't think I'd get past security in that thing Paul!
And Donnie, totally agree about khakis. :hysterical:

Met with Governor Brownback this morning and presented the call in his office. He was thrilled with it and was eager to try it out. Took him about a minute, but he was making decent turkey sounds after a little instruction. I told him that hopefully he wouldn't get skunked on this year's hunt like he did on last year's, but he needed to work on his calling. :hysterical: He was very nice, and loved the fact that I made a walnut stand to go with it. He vowed to place it on the shelf in the background (above his desk) so it would be visible whenever he signs a bill. The bummer with an osage striker and the black aluminum is that it leaves little yellow track marks all over it, and of course the newspaper reporters that took pics of the call got pics of it with tons of little yellow circles all over it. I told him that I grew up hunting on his brother's land and that we know some of the same people, and he said that I could hunt on his land anytime I wanted...I thanked him but didn't feel right trying to take him up on that today. All in all, a good experience.

Congratulations. Be sure to link to any newspaper articles that might arise from this adventure.

That is super awsome man. Congrats

Great picture Aaron, chokes me to death looking at that collar buttoned . :sweatdrop:
-
What an honor! You shouldn't have a button left on that shirt!

You'll probably be amused to find out that I went out and bought that shirt and tie last night, because I never wear stuff that nice. Then I had to get on youtube and watch (and re-watch twice) a video demonstrating how to tie a double windsor necktie knot. Yeah, I'm THAT classy. :whistling:

Nice job KC

Classier than I for sure. I'm lazy when it comes to getting dressed, so on the rare occasion I have to wear a noose, I settle just do the four-in-hand knot. That drove my grandpa crazy (he was GQ before there was such a thing) so I tied a Windsor knot for his funeral to appease his spirit, and that's probably the last time I'll put that much effort into it.

Thats awesome Aaron :up1:

Pictures would be NICE

See page 2 of this thread.

Did you guys call each other so you would have matching ties?! :D
Pretty awesome man.
Congrats on the land score too. :D
Parker

That's awesome Aaron  Congratulations
-
Congratulations Aaron, what a tremendous honor. Interesting, there was a discussion previously about the slacks to wear and you and he governer both have the same tie. Very nice too.
-
Yeah I didn't notice the ties' similarities until I saw the picture. Just glad that I don't have to wear one of those very often.
-
That's pretty sweet man! Must have been nerve racking to see him play it. The worse thing ever for me when it comes to the "call giving" part of call making, is when the recipient blows it backward/holds it wrong/or makes it squeal or something silly like that. :stickman1: Not good for a mans blood pressure.
If the land score is anything like the ones I've gotten he'll conveniently not remember he said that tomorrow :hysterical: just kiddin :sweatdrop: But in all honesty, I was told to come anytime on three private places last year that all fell through for unexplained reasons. Guess I'm not good at picking hunting buddies
COOL is how I can explain what happened. It is a great achievement for a call maker to make calls for the big leagues ~Andre
-
Aaron that is awesome bud, That is such an honor.
-
:D WHAT?! You don't wear a tie when you're turning?!
Parker
-
It has been a few years since I've worn a tie, but for the lst 25 years prior to retirement, it was everyday wear.
-
Opened the morning paper, there was a couple of stories about the governors turkey hunt. Sadly he didn't score a bird, no mention of Aaron's call, but his call was featured in one of the photos!
Note: the same pic can be seen at Kansas.com in sports section. Its not a crappy cell phone picture either.
-
Thanks for posting that Jon. Guess I'm going to have to retract my joking statement to him that his failure to bag a bird last year must be attributable to having a non-custom call! :whistling:
