The day before the turn-a-thon we all went wood shopping and I bought about four board feet of this unique wood. It is beech, but it has hundreds of little knots all over it. Most of the knots are open and go all the way through the 3/4" board. It is pretty dense wood as well. I bought all they had, as I knew I'd never see a piece like this one again unless I get lucky.
This call is being donated to the Johnson County, KS Pheasants Forever chapter and is being included in the live auction at their banquet. It is aluminum over glass and I used a Tru Oil finish. Buffed the high gloss off of it.

Man that thing is cool. and those little knots are open all tha way threw the call? I would love to see that one in person.

Awesome looking call  hope it brings top dollar for them :2up:

Yup, quite a few of them go all the way through. You can see the one on the outer edge of the call. Many of them are filled with bark to some degree. Before I put the surface in I held the pot up to the light and a lot was getting through the knots. They look like worm holes but they're not.

Oh boy me likely! I'm gonna have to place an order soon  I love the laser work and would hate to condition the slate when it is something good looking like that ~Andre

Thanks Andre. The surface is aluminum that has been beadblasted so you don't have to condition it. Occasional wipedowns with glass cleaner or an alcohol wipe brings it back to like new.

I just heard from my friend, who is at the Pheasants Forever banquet, that my call (paired with two boxes of Hevi-Shot) just went for $300 in the live auction. I would have never ever guessed it would go for anywhere near that much.

congrats
