I have noticed while turning bocote, cocobolo and a few other woods that it takes the finish forever to dry. What finish do you suggest for these kinds of woods?

I don't know if what I did was right but it seemed to work good. I finished mine with carnauba wax. It's a few weeks old now and nothing leaking through or anything like that.

Coco, bocote and a few other of the oily woods dont really needa finish. Just a good rub down with some teak oil ad then some wax. Over time, the calls will take on a nice patina of their own and look really good.
If you want to use a finish, a lot of guys have said they have had good results with rubbing the wood with acetone or another cleaner to remove the surface oil and then they apply the finish. I dont know how well this works but they seem to swear by it.
Now, I usually finish cocobolo with just wax or use a super glue type finish.
Dogcatcher posted something a while back about finishing oily woods I think. You could try the search but I dont know for sure he posted it here.

Lacquer is the best bet for a durable finish. The teak oil is what I would use, it is not a pure oil it is actually a type of varnish. Teak oil provides a good protective finish. Wax is really a protective coat for the finish and not a finish in itself. Carnauba is the hardest know wax but still not as protective of wood as a finish.

Thank you guys.
I have been using either a tung oil finish but it seems the odor never leaves and then I went to a spar urethane. I have tried both of those on bocote and cocobolo and after several days it still is tacky. I need to fix that problem.

Blacky, try some MINK OIL. I use mink oil almost exclusivley on all woods as a base. It acts as a water repellant/sealant/protectant. After you apply it, let it sit nice and pretty for three to four days and it will be ready for any finish you want. I do this and then use MOSERS Paste Wax for final coating. I've had pretty good luck and nice results with this combo!

I spray or dip mine in deft lacquer only. I don't use acetone on them at all and never have had a problem. Poly will not dry on coco so your going to have to wipe it off as good as you can and then use deft or something similar. Ryan

For oily woods I start with a BLO soaking, then let it drip dry, then buff out with carnuba wax on a buffing wheel

I use the carnuba on my bocote and coco calls also.Works well for me so far.

I use a friction polish to finish all my calls.I put it on while on the lathe leave the lathe on while the polish dries then buff it out.Seems to wrk pretty well

This coco call is a teak oil finish buffed on a three wheel buff after it dries. Let the teak oil dry for a couple of days before you buff. Shawn

Now that is a finish, a beautiful finish and a good functional and durable finish.
