Title: Bowl Making help needed
Post by: BLKDOGS on June 01, 2011, 07:49:05 AM
I made a bowl for my wifes birthday. She really did loved it and cant wait for the stain and poly to go on it.
My question is how do I get the inside smooth as I can get the outside? I was using ash glued together and while turning the inside I kept cathcing the tool leaving big gouges. I finally  got it close to what I was looking for but left a lot of tool marks.  I know I should go buy some tools that are built for bowl making  but what are they and what is the best way to hollow out the inside?

Thanks Guys

Hi BLKDOG, I worked with Jimmey Clewes. and a 3/8'' double bevel bowl gouge works best for the inside of the bowl. Traditional grind at about 55 to 60 degree angle should be able to cut that into the bottom and center of the bowl and you should have minimal sanding. a also the carbide round tip works well if you take a very light cut.
Hope that helps.

I use a round carbide chisle. If you dont have one yet they are easy to make yourself. Let me know if you need help.
