My first custom turkey decoy. 1.0 (better pics up now)
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:24:36 PM »
Her name is pronounced "One Point Oh".   :up1:

I've had this idea in mind for some time now, and seeing stevep's decoy coming to life on here really kicked my thought process into a higher gear.  I appreciate that Steve!

The decoy is made out of an old piano lid I bought from an Amish auction in Jamesport, MO about 5 years ago.

There are three sections of the lid glued together.  The two outter sections are routered out on the inside to reduce the weight of the decoy.  The inside section has had the center of the section of that wood bandsawed out to reduce weight.

The body of the decoy up to the neck is three sections wide.....making the decoy about 4 inches thick or so.  The two outter sections end at the neck, so the head is only one section wide (the middle one).

The head is shaped a lot more than the rest of the body.  Everything is just slightly rounded how ever you look at it though.

2-D with a thickness is what I was after, and I think I pulled it off well enough to fool a bird or two.  I painted the base with spray paint, and painted with kiddie paint brushes and acrylic paint from there.

Total project cost was between 12 and 15 bucks.

2.0 will be full of many more curves, and I am also planning on detailed feather carving on her.  If she is ready for 2012, I will be happy.

I expect 1.0 to have a couple kills under her belt this spring.  I see no reason why she wouldn't.

Sorry for the crappy pictures.  I took them with my cell phone, and a friend helped me get them to where I could post them up.  I GREATLY appreciate her help!

I've got a few process pictures too, and hope to have some nice field pictures of my youngest boy posing with her this weekend when he kills his gobbler.   :2up:

I've got a car charger coming for my computer that will allow me to sit in the parking lot of McD's for a few minutes here and there to get some pictures downloaded on to the inter-web sometime soon.   :up1:

Now you're screwed...I'm telling you carving is a creative sickness!
She looks good, should fool some toms.
I'm geussing she just sits on a wooden dowel for a stake?

Looks very good, No doubt it will be awesome in the woodlot and I would be quite confident with it in the fields also. Bet it could take a hit from 30 yds away also

Here's some outdoor pictures of my custom turkey decoy.

I think this will do JUST fine for now.  She didn't get to hunt this week because of the poor weather conditions in the mornings, but I will get her out next week during the regular season.
