Ever made a custom turkey decoy?
« on: March 16, 2011, 11:42:12 PM »
Stevep got me wound up today by showing me some awesome photos of the turkey decoy he is carving.

I've been thinking for a couple years now about making a decoy to kill a bird over that I called in with one of my calls.

No doubt Dave Constantine was a big inspiration for me to want to give this a run too.

Steve's is VERY well designed, and will end up being very life-like, I can tell.  Dave's idea of having a thickness to the decoy, but not having it be completely to form is the direction I'm headed.

Mine will not be painted all fancy either, but will have the general colors and demensions.

I drew out a pattern today, and spent a little time this afternoon hollowing out my form to reduce the weight.

What's everyone else got on with stuff like this?  I know there's a lot of duck carving that goes on, but the idea of a single turkey decoy made by me bringing that gobbler in the last little bit REALLY has me wound up!

You are taking pictures of the process aren't you? If so, where are they? If not, why not?

  I'm not taking pictures, because my process sucks.  I was going fast yesterday to just get a base to work off of.  If I can get my tools to help me shape it, I may start taking pictures.

Otherwise, I'll end up crudely painting this one, and making another one out of a wood that's easier to work.

That sounds like an awsome idea Parker. I too would like to see pics of the process and def of the finished product. It would be amazing to call a big ol gobbler up with your own call and own hand made decoy.
I get to try my own turkey calls for the first time this weekend and I can hardly wait.

Parker, do you bump around the decoy carving forums?  That's where I saw dave constantines turkey decoy.  Really cool bird.

No, I've never been on a decoy carving forum.  I saw Dave's on his site.  550 bones too!

No pictures means it never happened!!!    :tt2:  Just giving you a hard time!  but seriously I'd love to see some pictures.  What type of wood are you carving it out of?

Well, the only cheap (free) thing I had laying around big enough was the top off of a piano.  Its got some kind of laminate on each side, and then some crazy looking partical board stuff on the inside.  I don't know how well it is going to shape for me.  The better it shapes, the more time I will put into it.  Otherwise, I'm just gonna slap some paint on it, and let it ride.  I want to see how simple I can make one, and get it to work really.

Some point in time though, I'll want to go full-blown on one for a lifelike decoy that will probably be living room decor when it is not in the field hunting.

Here's a couple links that were passed on to me where two decoy makers have made turkey decoys.  Thought you all might enjoy seeing them.   :gitrdone:

Take photos, that way the rest can see them.  Regardless of how good or bad it turns out, with the knowledge and ideas of the people on the forum there will be suggestions and more help than you can imagine.  The next one should be a combination of your original and a lot of ideas on how to improve it.

You can stumble in the dark alone, or drag each of in with you.

And I, for one, want to be drug into the process. Pictures are mandatory!

As I just posted in the wood rasp thread, I've messed up by sending out too many family photos via email this month.  I'm going to take pictures, but I won't be able to post them until probably next month.

I can visit website after website with almost no issues, but as soon as I start moving pictures around, my data gets ate up quickly.

Well, I stripped the outsides of my two sides off a few days ago, and shaped her a little.  Not much though.  Its mostly a flat decoy with some width to it.  I'd like for it to have a depth in the wings, but I think this will do for now.

I saw that Steve Parisi (sp) had his decoy done on a couple sites today, so he got me further inspired to continue work on mine.  I broke out my paints, and got to work.  Everything looks pretty good to me.  Its not 100 percent realistic, that is for sure, but I don't really feel like that is a must for turkeys with the birds I've killed in the past with the ol' foam decoys.

I sure hope to get some pictures up sometime soon.  I'm getting ready to go over on my internet and pay the penalty this month, so I may have to run into town to McDonalds and spend a few minutes in there posting things up.  :D
