Some background....One of our DU committee members has (HAD - we lost Dan last December) a watershed leased. He lets people hunt it if they make a donation to DU. Over the last several years, this has raised over $30,000 for the ducks. He gets nothing from this and pays the lease out of his pocket. The committee built four permanent blinds for "the pond" and every year we go out and brush the blinds before the season starts. Our usual method is to harvest some of the invasive Eastern Red Cedars from the surrounding woods and use the entire trees to brush the blinds. We dig post holes and set the trees in the ground whole. The trees are left there until we return the following summer to pull them up and start again. This piece of wood came from the trunk of one of the trees buried at the pond. It was in the ground for a year. We harvested the log and it was air-dried for a couple years. A friend and I finally got around to making something from it.The call is being donated to our chapter's annual dinner this September. Several of the regular hunters from the pond are dinner attendees and steadfast supporters. We expect that they will appreciate the chance to own a tangible piece of their memories at the pond. It's a very unique and beautiful piece of cedar. The insert is from the same stick yet it varies greatly from the barrel.First few cuts to get the 2"x2" turning blank and to see what we had to work with...rough stock...rounding it out...finding some character...lots of color...roughed out barrel...Finished call.....
