Louisiana sound board from pen blank
« on: July 20, 2008, 02:38:55 PM »
I've been working on an ivory duck call.  Today I made the sound board from an elephant ivory pen blank.

The red sound board parts are what I want to make in elephant ivory.

Drill air channel on lathe.

Turn down to half inch diameter.

Test fit in jig.

Sound board in jig.

Sand wedge on one inch belt sander.

Sound board installed with bronze phosphor metal reed.  Very ducky.

Good fit.

Finished call.

Duck call sound board and predator call sound board.

OK, it may sound dumb but I gotta ask what is the difference between a regular sound board and a Louisiana Sound board???

I have used three styles of sound board in duck call making.  Besides the Louisiana style there is the J frame or Arkansas style and Reelfoot lake style.  The Arkansas J frame is the most common style.  A cork holds the reed in place in a cork notch on the J frame.  In Reelfoot style sound boards a metal reed is held in place by a wooden wedge that is cut from part of the insert.  All three styles make similar quacking sounds.  The Louisiana board is adjustable over a good range of duck sound and can also be tuned to make snow goose, fawn, bear, and cat sounds.  The other two styles use a fixed length reed and air channel and make a narrower range of sounds.

Talk about a collectable set of calls !! Do you already have a buyer?
I'm soooo not going to turn any ivory, but maybe some day I will feel up to it.
That's the first LA style jig I have ever seen. Did you make it ?
