What would you like to see next?
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:04:33 AM »
Looking at either coming up with something new, adding a product I dont yet carry, or creating something that people have a need for.

Any ideas?

As in tooling like scrapers and skews?

Its a thought...  not sure how popular it would be... but something to think about fer sure.  I have some inserts that would rock in wood, and might be okay in acrylic on a hand held tool...

I'd really like to see a public louisiana style that's actually avalible when a guy is interested. I know there's a guy or two that do these, but nobody actually has them on hand when you go to buy one. I've just had it with waiting for 9 months for someone to get around to having a few built.....

Another idea or two would be a jig for cutting reelfoot style boards, and mabey a jig for cutting the tonebards for whistles (like the iverson style 2 hole).

Thanks for the input!

On the LA style jig.  youre thinking 1/2" guts? similar in operation to the goose gut jig - or will it need to be the set screw style? What would be an acceptable price on these?  They'd be more than a AR style public just because of the amount of cutting and material

On the Reelfoot Jig.  Youre talking where the sound board is a cross between an AR and an LA - soundboard on the keg, but uses a wedge to hold the reed.  Thinking like the old Mallard tone calls, or like some of the Duck Commander calls Ive seen are - right?  The catch on those is the taper that will have to be in the jig, and holding the part still.  Not saying it cant be done... but I have yet to be able to think of a way that it can be done affordably.  But Ill think on it.  Any input there on what is and isnt important would be helpful since I dont make that style, and dont have one on hand to look at and "scheme" with :D

Whistle tone board jigs... that would probably be basically a jig that would do something like a gut wedge isnt it?

Id say all in all.. the big problem for me on any of these, is my lack of familiarity with them, and not knowing exactly what Im building.  I would probably have to solicit some help with the soundboards for these...  the other option is copying something existing, which, everyone knows how I feel about copying   :down1:

If someone wants to team up on something... Im game...  Im pretty sure I wont have the time to learn what I need to know to come up with my own soundbaords for each of these.

Lastly....  what kind of desire for these is out there?  The thing that makes stuff affordable is being able to run a larger size batch - but Im not in a financial position to sit on a large batch of something that only one or two people want.

Thanks again for the input!

A flat jig for the Louisiana style would be a good one.

Made out of maple, with 1/2 of the 1/2" toneboard being left in the jig.  Most important thing is the slope of the wedge.

This was my first test to see if it was flat.

Hope this helps.

That's similar to the jig I was looking at, but I never thought about a flat jig for the LA guts!

 Great idea Marvin!

Wade:

The whistle jig would be just about the same as a wedge jig, but not near as much angle or as deep. That always seems to be the spot guys get hung up on when trying to make whistles, just thought it would be a great tool to have.

The reelfoot jig would be just like a flat jig, but with a 3/4 hole for the toneboard. They use the curved metal reeds with a flat toneboard, and cutting the flat by hand always gives me the heebies..... :sweatdrop:

As for how many would want them, I know I'd look at something like them, but that's just me..... :2:

It cost me about 2 cents and a piece of maple and it has cut quite a few boards.

Okay, so a "Flat LA style gut jig" - that would alleviate the soundboard issue.
Im guessing a 2-3° taper on the wedge would be sufficient for that, and have it end up maybe .020-.030 "taller" than the bore diameter when added to the soundboard and a .010 reed?

How long would be good for the sound board?  1.75"?  Longer? Not that long?  Guessing somewhere around .5-.625 length for the wedge?

Thanks for the input... If I do something like this, I want to be sure its what you guys would want, since I dont make em that way, I dont have much personal experience to draw from, or the knowledge to know for sure that something would be handy.... or a pain in the rump if I did it one way or another.

Jester, any kinds of dimensions I could work with?  Depending... wondering if combining the whistle board into a wedge for something might work?  If I knew some dimensions there might be something that could do "double duty"

On the reelfoot...   so its not the style that has the wedge - just a "Flat jig" that is 3/4" bore?  How long would it need to be?

Not sure on the LA jig measurements and I am not at home to check mine,

Here is another a 1/2" flat jig for predator calls. On mine I use a 1/8" cork slot.  The back where I tapped in the bolt is about 5/8" thick, you can use it for size reference.  Since I am the only one that makes this style of predator call you may not sell many of them, but they can be screwed with to make wood duck calls.

I'll dig around and find the set of LA guts I was playing with, and a wedge for the whistle, and an insert for a reelfoot style call. Send them in at the same addy?

Id be curious to look em over... since Im not really familiar with them (well Im familiar with LA duck guts cause I carry them, but not with making them :D)

Yeah same ole address if youre wanting to send them my way... if yould rather just take a few measurements thats fine, unless your intending to offer the parts as they are to be duplicated...

Thanks again

Use em for duplication if you like, not big secrets in any of my stuff (until you're on the extra whammy mojo juice on the toneboard).

I had a heck of a time reading that too Wade, so I had to make some corrections for him.
