Well after countless hours and who knows how many dowels and about 20 pages of notes I finally did it.  Here is my first completly handmade mallard call with my own insert.  I am not saying this is the best sounding duck call but it is the first one that I would be willing to actually take duck hunting.  I still have work to do but it is finally starting to come together.  When you start to figure out what changes what it is like a light bulb just comes on in your head.  I want to thank everyone that has helped me through making my first 100% handmade mallard call.  I hope to help some of the newer guys when they start asking questions about mallard duck inserts.  I have learned alot from this website and I am going to be a member as long as it is around.  Without this site I don't know if I would have ever reached my goal.   :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

Picture below is the call I am talking about.  It is made out of coco.  The barrel and insert were both cut from the same blank so the grain matches up pretty well.  I don't think anyone could ever buy this call from me.  The finish is only one coat but I could not wait to show it off.  If you see something I need to change let me know.

Congrats on your journey so far!  It's a fun ride isn't it!!  Make sure you keep this one someplace special.  In about a year, you will come back to this one and just smile as you see what you are doing different compared to this first one.  I really like the overall shape of it and it looks good.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

Very nice John. Heed the advice from Bryan (Big B)... set this one aside and come back to it in a year or so. You'll see advances and progress in your own work and it will blow your mind.  Keep up the great work.  I enjoy seeing stuff like this.

That's a great feeling, knowing that you built something from end to end that works!

One thing I notice that you might think about a bit...... what are you using for corks?

Kinda looks like the walmart stuff, and if it is, try experimenting with some of the rubberized corks. That was by far one of the best steps I took when I started building my own inserts. The rubberized stuff seems to hold better over the long run, and stay in tune way longer than the natural stuff.

 Just a thought....

Congratulations, job well done  :punk: :punk:

I would simply put her on the shelf.  And as mentioned come back years later and see how far you`ve come.  It will surprise you more than you know
