I know this post is from 2010, but do any of y'all know where to get some of this? And what are y'all calling it? Thanks!!
It is just simply being known as "ceramic" in the custom call making world.
I talked with Will Primos about us custom call makers using it this past weekend, and he didn't bat an eye about it. I told him I called it ceramic and understood he called it Sla-tec or something of the sorts and his immediate response to that was, "It is an awesome surface, isn't it?! It makes a great call."
Some places you can pick it up......from Chad Hutcheson (Stumpy) as said in the beginning of this thread. You can also order it from call making suppliers like Brookside Game Calls, and Grassy Creek Game Calls (though last I heard about Grassy Creek on here, someone was having problems getting a hold of Darin).
I set up my calls to be set over double weight glass, and some others to be set over slate to where both sides of the call can be played.
Some folks say they can't get it to work the way they want.....it is too high pitched.
I would highly suggest, if you are just starting out, to make your calls slate over glass, and get the slate to run VERY well before spending money on tricky combinations or more expensive surfaces.
