BUGS!!!
« on: January 01, 2010, 07:22:31 PM »
I have a tote that I've been slow drying some hickory burl in. Noticed these critters walking around on it... in pretty good number.  Anyone know what they are?  I've tried a couple differen sprays and it doesn't seem to kill 'em all. Sorry about the bad pic but they're tiny buggers I had to crop my way to this. I'll try to get some better pics.

Can't seem to get a better pic.  I've tried a couple times.   :down1:   Man I hate the idea of burning all this.  I'll try another poison 1st.

How about good old Lacquer that should close up their breathing ports :devil2:

Try spraying a can of brake cleaner in and around them, it works on eveything around here.

If its cold put it outside and freeze them. Or in the freezer if you have room for a tote ..I use to raise pigeons and would get weevels in the feed and I would put it in the freezer for a day or to..And no more bugs .

LOL that a 30 gal. tote! I guess in small doses!   I sure would like to hear what your forestry buddy has to say Bucko. Surely there's a chemical that'll get rid of 'em.

My biggest worry on the mirowave is the burl isn't dry yet... I'd hate to put it in to have it check up.

Yup small doses.

Problem with spray is that it only lays on the surface.

Freeze just makes them dormant.

Oven cooking will burn anything before you get the internal temp high enough. Or a really long time.

So you need a way that penetrates the wood.  And through taxidermy I have found the micowave the only way to penetrate wood.  Mushrooms.  Bone etc.

Maybe putting it outside is dormant..But the deep freeze wipes them out.....

You can freeze them, nuke them and a lot of other things, but the easiest way to kill bugs in wood is to put them in a black plastic bag and set it in the sun.  The heat will kill them and the eggs they have already laid.

I received a reply back from my friend Mike who's the forester today, heres what he replied: Hey Buck,
took a look, it isn't a powder post beetle or any other beetle, they start out as grubs. It looks to me like a silverfish, or at least of the same family, and it probably isn't doing any harm to the piece of wood. My best guess the get rid of it is to get it drink. Take a mason jar full of cotton, fill it up with denatured alcohol, and place it inside of the container with the block. Whenever you are trying to collect insects for a collection this is the way you would kill and preserve them.
If it doesn't work your still not out much, just remember that alcohol is flammable.

Try some Borax & sugar mixed. Sprinkle it over the wood lightly. The Borax might kill them. If not you can wash your clothes with what's left.  :2up:

I mix 2 cups Borax & 1 cup sugar thoroughly. Then I walk around the house sprinkling the stuff all along the foundation & around the base of the trees. Those damn black ants will carry it all back to the nest & they will share it. Apparently they can't taste the difference between the two & it kills them all.
