solid surface sticks
« on: November 12, 2009, 12:51:28 PM »
here are some pieces i have available now.  i do have a fair amount of each color except for the light brown.  i'll need a few days to make some sticks once these run out.  they are three 1/2" pieces glued together and finish out to 1 7/16 x 1 7/16 x length.  i can also do 1" squares x length.  i'll consider all trades but on the same hand i don't want to accumulate too much of the same wood.  i'm pretty good stocked on walnut, cherry, birdseye maple, osage, cocobolo, and black cherry pearl acrylic.  depending on what you have to trade i'll go up to 3-1 in your favor.  as far as buying outright i figure about $10 a stick is a fair price.

Those look pretty nice. But I got a few questions that I'm sure a few other will also have. What length are the sticks and is the $10 per stick price shipped or will shipping be extra?

i'll generally  make them 12-15" or so.  some pieces may come out smaller depending on how large the piece is that i cut from.  buying outright, the shipping will be extra, for trades the shipping cancels each other out.  any other questions feel free to ask.

You say their glued up from 3, .5" pieces......Are the joints visible? Also do you have any black onyx? I think that is what you call the color!

Price seems reasonable for 12-15" stock though!

Thanks

some of the seams will be visible but inconspicuous.  some colors hide the seams better than others, i use color matching adhesive in the layup as well.  i tend to stay away from solid colors cause they show up in those more than colors with some chips and specks.  fyi guys i can sandwich colors as well if you prefer something like that, check out fowlweathercustomca lls.com to see a sandwiched call.(this way you don't worry with bad seams)

I received a box of this stuff from Chris a few days ago and let me tell you guys it is beautiful stuff.  He's a great guy to deal with as well!  The glue joints can be found but that's only because of the little "stones" in the material starting and stopping.  The glue he uses is colored to match so you don't see the glue itself at all.  The material turns pretty much like acrylic.  I've been wet sanding it from 320 to 800 then using plastic polish and it shines beautifully.

At $10/stick the price is fairly reasonable in my opinion.  Think of the price of 4' of colored acrylic rod in 1-1/2" diameter....More than $40.

Here's the first call I turned from the stock Chris sent me.

The seams are barely visible in the blue at all.  They do show up on the white, but only if you hold it up to a light!  They do not show up enough to detract from the call in any way.  The darker colors that don't allow light through like the white does would be even better.
