I don't really have a shop to display my calls at.  I'm just a hobbiest.  I don't really have a lineup of calls either.  I just make em one at a time and all of them are different.  Whatever I feel like doing at the time is what gets done.

Have you been to the fancy decoy and call show in St.Charles?  I'm thinking about going to the show the next time to check it out.

You won't get money rich in this hobby.  The richness is in the culture, the craft, the friends you meet along the way, and being able to call in a wary game animal with a call that you made with your own hands.

I have been to the fancy decoy and call show in St Charles.  If you like antique decoys, it is definitely worth attending.  The duck call part of the show has really dropped off in recent years.  Last year there were only 4-5 call makers with tables. I would not recommend making the trip if you are only interested in calls.
Have you been to the Mississippi Valley Callers Classic in Burlington IA?  They hold a sanctioned duck calling contest there every year (Feb?) and there are several tables with calls.  I believe there's also one in Peoria, but I have only been to the one in Burlington.

What is the band of rough finish on the calls called? The only thing I can think of is checkering, but it is not a regular pattern.

B,
Very nice work.  What type of finish is that, and where do you get those black bands?

The glossy finish is Spar.  The black bands are wood - ebony to be exact.  If you are looking for metal black bands, look up Gouldman.  He can anodize some aluminum bands black for you.

B,
When you say ebony is that African blackwood?

The black colored ebony is called Gabon Ebony I believe. Very hard and dense, but be carefull drilling it. Heat tends to crack ebonies, and can make a high dollar blank useless in a hurry.
