Spalted
« on: May 24, 2008, 07:34:59 PM »
Had the fella that gave me the Walnut root call me today. He had a Hackberry tree laying on the ground for about a year. It was in a fence row so I can't cut at the lower part but he had a couple pieces for me. Am I having a good year or what?

Nice looking wood. I never heard of that tree. What part of the country is that from?

It's (& I'm) from Tennessee John, These trees are everywhere. It's a fairly smooth barked tree, if your a deer hunter its one to avoid with a climbing stand...that's experience talking. No fun sliding down so hard/smooth, the stand doesn't get a good "bite". I have some spalted Hackberry that's dry I've made a few out of, it's just this was free!

Oh yaeh I'm a deer huntin fool but you never get me off the ground. Getting in a tree makes me dizzy.  ;D Atleast that's what I blame it on. Nice looking wood though. Can't wait to see some calls.

Cut it up today, in 2x2 it'll probably shrink down to about 1 3/4 square got about 10 bdf  (guessing). Some was full of ant's. Even had termites. LOL tried to keep it away from the house and vacume up everything just what I need.  here's a pic of some of it.

Sure do Bill, it'll be awhile before this is dry. It was cut up like firewood laying in his field for about 1 year. Cut it up and checked moisture 48%  ??? Never would've thought. It does seem pretty hard, I had some before that I had to stabilize but I'll have to see when it dry's.

Not sure what the other folks are using, I've been using min-wax wood hardener. Drilled a hole in the top of a mason jar, hook a vacuum pump (from a refrigerator), I put the ruff turned call into a cup about 1/2 full of the wood hardener and pull a vacuum on it. It boils until it's "water logged" pull it out and let it dry a couple days. Tried doing this 3 times once made the call difficult to turn and sand. 1 time is plenty.
