Hard Oils ?

Spoons are easier than lathe work me thinks....



My first turning..shaving brush handle....gave me a bit more of a challenge than a spoon

I have made many spoons over the years and the challenge is the one you give yourself. I know what would be difficult for me and if I pass up the chance to try I am missing out.
I thought I had been there done that but after seeing these spoons I see I have not yet mastered it.....

Thanks all you guys for the spoon comments....I really did not mean to take this post off on such a tangent.

I find working with hand tools easier than power...I am hoping the lathe turns out to be a fun investment for me.  I can say that no matter what using an end product I made provides endless satisfaction.  I am not sure I am ever going to have a call of any sort that fits that desire, but I can say it is fun trying.

Stirring up a cup of cocoa with my own carved spoon makes it all the more enjoyable...here's to you cats and all your good advice.

The spoon does look great and I like the finish that you have on it.  Now about that picture - what are you taking pictures of and what is on the top of your tripod?  It looks like you are a Nikon user.

That was taken down at Mt Rainier National Park last summer.  Top of the Tripod can have an assortment of equipment...Nikon D200, Canon G9 or my wifes Nikon 8800.  We had cocoa overlooking a glacier....but later we were a few miles away at Myrtle Falls...

That is one GREAT looking photo.  Nicely framed and great overall composition.  I was at Rainier National a few years back and it was a day of low clouds and then rain.  Needless to say the pictures there were limited.  Did you do any PP on the shot or were you in a really good spot at just the right time for the lighting?

There is some post processing on that shot....


The light balance between the mountain/sky and the deep canyon was a huge problem.  I used a 3 stop hard edge ND grad to hold back the light on the mountain to bring the two parts of the image within the dynamic range of my camera.  Without that trick or doing some HDR bracketing I could not have made this one.

You can easily see the line of the ND grad in the foreground trees.  The high tech way would have been to shoot for HDR work, but I am not very good at that....so old school film days methods were my choice.'


Thanks for the comments, that is one of my favorite images from Rainier.  It can be a real challenge for light.
