Burl ID???
« on: March 06, 2009, 04:37:15 PM »
I went out "Burl hunting" with a buddy today.  Forgot my Audubon field guide when we went. Cut these burls off and I'm having trouble identifying the type of tree. These 2 are from the same tree I'm showing inside and out. It was in the woods so couldn't do the "leaf" thing. (may have to go back in the spring) I'm thinking some type of oak. Thought I'd see if ya'll could give a hand. Thanks!
Brad

Google White Oak bark and see what you think.   That's what it looks like to me.   A tip off would be acorns on the ground under the tree - obvious I know, but it would be worth looking around if you can.

That is what I thought too. I did google it and it does look like the white oak. I was comparing it to my audubon field guide but when I googled it there was a much closer example. Thank you Al! I think this is right but any other thoughts are welcome. I've sent wood to the forestry to ID before, and it's free I'm not sure how they'd do with burls though.

Should also have that weird oak smell to it. Kinda citrusy with a hint of dill pickle.          Ryan

Hadn't thought about that Ryan, it doesn't have an oak type smell to it. Hmmm guess I'll have to ship some to the forestry and see if they'll figure it out for me.

Does cutting off these sections hurt the tree in any way? What steps should be taken to ensure the tree stay's alive while I can harvest the wood?

I'm no expert by any means but we usually spray a little paint on. Someone on here may surely knows more about this.

Bill I looked up red elm bark...you may be on to something there. I'll probably cut it up and have it drying, leaves aren't to far down the road. I'll put the audubon book on it!

I usually store them in box's for a while to get the drying started up right. It doesn't take much with the burls ruin them. I slow it down best I can.  I am hoping you'll see these again.
