Import Colorwood/Dymondwood substitute
« on: December 01, 2015, 09:33:42 PM »
Larry at Hut Products showed me some color samples of a new laminate product. He is still waiting for his any to show and I'm getting antsy. I can't remember the brand name. Does anybody know the name and if anyone is stocking it.

I would guess it is Webb Wood?  I pointed WW in the direction of a few past buyers of colorwood/dymondwood, in hopes supplies would get back up so us little guys can get ahold of a chunk of a specific color again when needed by a customer for a call. I hope that works out.

I also hope that WW coming on the scene will get the spectraply guys back to being more responsive to the little guys.  Their pictures they post on FB though, seems to show the gun stock industry is keeping them busy.  Their last email said the 'store' is going to be back up in 2016. I don't know if that is January 2016 or December 2016.

I got an email from WebWood also.  Looks quite interesting.  It claims to be better than Dymondwood, SpectraPly, Colorwood, and Dymalux.  I'm trying to figure out what types (there are several) compare to Dymondwood and what compares to SpectraPly as there are different densities involved.

I'm looking forward to seeing the reviews from other call makers as to how it turns and finishes.

I read their site and it looks interesting.  Seems awful spendy to me though.

If it is harder than Dymalux like they claim, hell froze over, pigs are flying and I'm a monkey's uncle.

Ya I was a little put off by the price also.  I didn't do the math to actually figure out what a single call blank would go for but I'm sure it's not going to be cheap.

I got the same email today as well. I'm not all that interested in it though.

I am still waiting to see a call maker put it to use and tell us about it.

I was in routine contact with them in the summer, but I asked for samples to know what hardnesses to order, do a review for call makers and such, and have not got a response from them since then.

I did speak to them and they are trying to get in something to fill in gap Rutland left. Even with the power density stuff it is pretty pricey. On another note I did get email from cousineau about some three inch cutoffs they are selling by the box. When I tried to contact them....no answer.

Gotta love Cousineau.  They just can't seem to hold things together.  Too bad cause I do like their Spectraply...

I didn't say in my earlier post, but my understanding was that this stuff is being imported!

Cousineau is back up and running pretty well with blanks ans panels readily available on their website (for now) and WebbWood lowered their prices (at some amount) about two weeks ago.

It sounds like HUT has some WebbWood in stock for smaller quantity buys.

I think it is all being imported, no matter the company.

Cousineau has had a couple different sales since the beginning of the year on Spectraply, which is the low density stuff that turns more like natural birch.

As far as a dymondwood alternative for striker making, it looks like WebbWood is still not as hard as dymondwood, at least the stuff they are putting out right now. (They claim to have 5 hardnesses, though only 2 have hit the market it seems).

I can wait.  Eventually we will have dymondwood or a true sub.  Hopefully sooner than later.
