More newbie wood questions?
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:25:11 PM »
Is there a difference between kiln dried and air dried, as far as using them for turning calls? I mean is one more susceptible to cracking then the other?
I was also wondering if you can use older wood, for instance an older piece of furniture or stairway spindle for turning calls? Does the age, dryness or brittleness become an issue?

There is no cut and dried answer for that, alot of that will depend on the type of wood in question. Personally, I prefer air dried, but alot of times the woods wasnt take care of properly. Old furniture and stuff provides some excellent sources of wood for calls.

Daren99, I will try any type of wood that I can get my hands on.  You never know what will work until you try.  And If it doesn't work, well, you got some practice in. And just remember not to use that anymore.
