Dowels On Demand
« on: January 01, 2009, 01:15:56 PM »
Has anybody used these folks? I'm sure they will be great to deal with. I made an order on Dec 22nd with them & I know they say allow 10-14 days for any order to be shipped & this is the Holiday season. I just wish I would have gotten a confirmation from them is all. I am looking forward to the wood too.

They are on the list at the top of the Forum here. Toward the bottom I believe.

You're Welcome Braz.

I ordered from them to see how much better my tool edges will last by not knocking the corners off the blanks 1st. I don't mind sanding but I hate sharpening.  :down1:

I have been emailing the owner @ dmandryk@memlane.com
and getting information. He has been very helpful.  I'm onboard with the dowel deal... especially for J frame inserts.  He answered a question to a post I had earlier as to what is the whitest wood. This guy is sending me a sample piece of European Hornbeam    Never heard of it, but I'll soon know if it's white or not.

Mutt,  I've got a holly striker blank from him before that was CRAZY white.  I'll be interested to see this new stuff you're getting!

I have spent a few Hundred dollars with Dowels on demand and they are first class
I have talked to them on the phone too and they are most helpful. The big thing you have to remember is the shipping coming in from Canada I always have them ship me Expidite shipping cost a bit more but better than waiting for ever to get what you need. If you talk to them they will reccommend the best and most cost effective way to get your order.

Larry, how are they on shipping cost? Parker, I too thought the Holly would be the whitest but this guy @ D.O.D said the Euro Hernbeam was whiter?  White is good plus I need it to be hard.  From what I have read, the Hornbeam is as stout as hickory.  I too appreciate the feedback.  You guys really help taking the guess work out of some of this stuff.

I'm having a fantastic New Year so far..... we have 150 "visitors" on our flight deck and now we get to take them back home. Sad, but necessary.

Gotcha. 24 - 12" x 5/8" dowels would weigh no more than 3-5 lbs?  Considering where it is coming from, I guess $20.00 is not too much to ask for shipping.  If the wood is good quality it sure makes it easier to make "things" from round stock vice square!  Woodcraft also has a decent selection of dowels as well but nothing like D.O.D!

Thanks Larry.
