Slap vs Vibrates the Videos
« on: March 22, 2014, 09:49:25 PM »
Here it is everyone, 5 videos showing the reed of a duck call using a High Speed camera.

1st let me thank my co workers for allowing me to do this and for working with the camera system to get the 1st time footage. A big thank you to Wade and Stumpjumper for getting me barrels and inserts ASAP.
I enjoyed doing this and learned a lot about how a reed moves in a duck call.
My Coworker camera operator said this was a small target and worked hard at getting the camera focused and lighting correct.
We did use compress air using shot blast of air just like we would to get a "quack" out of a call. I made the set up to try and get the best sound I could with compressed air very very low PSI. That's why the air gun is in the PVC pipe, it just sound better with that set up.
I could not get the footage off the laptop with out supporting software, so I had to video the video.
The camera is a 250 frames per second system, and still is a blur to see super clearly. Man the reed moves!!
Now I need to get the work on gluing some wood together for St Charles.

The set up picture

Video 1 is shot more from the top to show how the reed moves all the way back to the cork.

Video 2 shows how the reed move so fast and stays high during the blast of air

Video 3, is from the start of air and is a frame by frame view. You will see how high the reed is and not covering the rule under it. look at the lower right, you will see the arrow clicking the screen through frame to frame.

Video 4 shows the start of air going into the call and about at the 9 sec. mark you will see the reed stay high and the most amount of air is moved through.

Video 5, This is the cool one. it is a clip of the reed in the middle of a blast of air frame by frame just vibrating in mid air. I really like the way the reed is bent upward and almost like the contour of the tone board. This is my favorite one.

so I would say it vibrates.   Let the debates begin or maybe end.
Enjoy and it was a pleasure to be able to do this.

That is very, very neat to see.  I appreciate you taking the time to put this together, and appreciate those that helped it happen.

Well, after looking at it several times, it looks to me that the reed is slapping the tone board.  I guess...  The surprising thing is the speed at which the reed is moving...wow!

Thank you Ron. My thoughts are that the reed lifts so high is it touching the inside of the barrel and does that affect or add the the sound?

Wow, I never thought I would be able to crawl inside the barrel of a call, but this is as close as I'll ever get........Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!

That was really neat to see, Mylar must be pretty resilient for a reed to undergo so much movement at such a high rate of speed. Thanks for doing this, though I suppose it leaves a bit more room for individual interpretation than most would have hoped... still appears to be slapping the board, yet in some cadences it may not be. So I suppose the answer to the question: "Does the reed slap or vibrate?" Would be, "Yes."

I was hoping it would be more conclusive, but I knew it would be tough to pull off. The debate will continue I believe

Thanks again for all the effort Ron.....nothing conclusive I'm guessing? Still very interesting.
